Changgyung Palace was the place where queens mostly lived during the Chosun Dynasty. It consists of Honghwamun, the main gate that boasts well-organized structures and solemn beauties, and Okchungyo which is famous for its round stone sculpture of an animal and its beauty in parapet. You can see the Royal Ancestors' Shrine through an overpass without any additional entrance fee. The Royal Ancestors' Shrine where spirit tablets of successive kings and queens of Chosun were enshrined is the symbolic building for the Chosun dynasty. Its simplicity, dignity and majesty represents another beauty of Chosun architecture. It is also registered with UNESCO as a cultural heritage of the world. In the Shrine, memorial services for successive kings and queens of the Chosun dynasty were dedicated. Such services are called as the memorial services of the Royal Ancestors' Shrine. The services were regarded as the most important ceremonies during the Chosun dynasty. Still, on the first Sunday of May every year, such ceremony is reenacted in the Shrine.

Kwanghwamun means enlightening as bright as the sun. Sunggye Lee, Taejo of Chosun, built Hongyemun(rainbow-shaped gate) by piling up stones when he moved the capital to Hanyang in 1395. Kwanghwamun was completed by building a gate tower on top of Hongyemun. It was burnt down along with Kyungbok Palace by the Japanese troops during the time of the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Some 270 years later, Daewongun reconstructed it. However, the Japanese governor-general, after the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910, built their own building inside the Kyungbok Palace. In 1927, the Japanese governor-general demolished Kwanghwamun with the excuse that the building of the governor-general was hidden by Kwanghwamun. The current Kwanghwamun was reconstructed with concrete by the order of the President, Junghee Park in 1968. This gate, which once was described as the most beautiful one among the gates of the 5 palaces, was rebuilt with iron concrete so that it is not listed either in the list of national treasures, or a treasure or even local cultural assets.
